Pattern Notes

Ch 3 at beginning of rows counts as a double crochet stitch.

It is important to make a gauge swatch before beginning, as different brands of yarn or even different colors in the Yarnspirations line may affect the finished size.

It is a good idea to count at the end of each row to ensure a straight and even edge – the chain 3 may be difficult to see as a stitch, so counting will prevent any accidental increases or decreases.

Special Stitches

The Foundation Double Crochet (fdc) is essentially creating a chain and a double crochet all in one motion. This creates a nice stretchy edge that gives you the same consistent tension as your normal double crochet rows throughout the pattern. This will eliminate your chain edge having a tighter tension than the rest of your blanket, creating a very even and beautiful edge on both sides.

  • Make a slip knot around your hook and chain 3
  • Step 1 – Yarn over, insert hook into third chain from hook and pull up a loop, (3 loops on hook). Yarn over, pull through 1, yarn over pull through 2, yarn over pull through last 2
  • Step 2 – Yarn over, insert hook into third stitch from hook, (the bottom stitch from the previous foundation row), pull up a loop. Yarn over, pull through 1, yarn over pull through 2, yarn over pull through last 2
  • Repeat step 2 until you have 72 foundation double crochet stitches

This pattern works best when using foundation double crochet, but this method can be substituted with a starting chain of 75, then inserting your hook into 3rd chain from the hook. Please note – if you use the chain method to start your blanket, your tension may be tighter on the starting edge than the finishing edge. If you find your chain edge is to tight, try sizing up on this row only. The foundation double crochet allows for a stretchy edge, but either option will work for this pattern.

Pattern

Setup: Fdc 72, turn (72)

Row 2: Ch 3, dc in each st across, (ensuring you are counting and not to forget the ch 3 counts as a stitch), turn (72)
