Overview

The Harmony Shawl is a beginner friendly pattern that uses two of my favorite stitches: double crochet and the puff stitch. These stitches produce great texture and drape, combined with modern color-blocking to create a beautiful shawl that can be worn many ways and through many seasons.

Abbreviations

  • ch – chain
  • chsp – chain space
  • dc – double crochet

  • st(s) – stitch(es)

Special Stitches

  • PS – puff stitch
  • yarn over insert into stitch and pull up a loop, (3 loops on hook), yarn over insert into same stitch and pull up a loop, (5 loops on hook), repeat 2 more times, yarn over and pull through all 9 loops on hook, finish with chain 1

Materials

  • Approximately 740 yd or 680 m of Worsted Category #4 Weight Yarn
  • Designer’s sample made with Skein Tones in the colors Ivory (Color A), Cedarwood (Color B), Adobe (Color C), and Nutmeg (Color D) by Lion Brand Yarn
  • Each color uses approximately 185 yd / 170 m
  • US H/5mm Crochet Hook, or hook to obtain gauge
  • Scissors
  • Stitch Marker
  • Tape Measure
  • Tapestry Needle
  • Blocking Mats, T-Pins, & Wool Wash, or Steamer (optional)

Pattern Notes

  • All Little Red Knits’ patterns are written in standard US terms.
  • ch 1 and ch 2 at beginning of rows do not count as a st.
  • ch 3 in row 1 does count as a dc st.
  • Note that yardages are close estimates that assume proper gauge.
  • It is wise to use stitch markers in the increase stitches and in the middle stitch to easily keep track of the center point of your shawl and when to increase.
  • To make your shawl larger than the pattern sample, continue repeating rows 3-8.
  • There is a stitch diagram and a stitch count chart available in the paid patterns on Etsy and Ravelry.
  • It is recommended to wet or steam block your shawl for the best finished results.
  • Keep in mind: your gauge, yardage used, and finished size may vary depending on if you make any changes to the pattern as written.

Pattern

Row 1: With Color A, create a magic circle and ch 3. Make 4 more dc within the circle and pull tight to close, turn. – (5 dc)

For an alternative start to the magic ring:  ch 4 and sl st to first ch made to make a ring. Ch 3 (counts as a dc), and make 4 more dc in the ring. – (5dc)

Row 2: ch 2, 2dc, 2dc, 3dc (PM in middle st), 2dc, 2dc, turn. – (11 dc)

Row 3: ch 2, 2dc in first two sts, dc to marker, 3dc in middle st (PM in 2nd/middle st), dc to second to last st, 2dc in last 2 sts, turn. (17 dc)

Rows 4-6: repeat row 3.

Row 7: ch 1, PS in first, *sk 1, PS,* repeat from * to marker. PS in middle st, PS in next st, *sk 1, PS,* repeat from * to end. (19 PS)

Row 8: ch 2, 2dc in ch 1 space of PS, 2dc in space between next PS, dc in ch 1 of each PS and between each PS, until you reach the middle PS. 3dc in middle PS, dc in top of each PS and between each PS to last chsp, 2dc in chsp, 2dc in top of last PS. (43 dc)

Rows 9-44: Repeat rows 3-8 or until your work measures 27” / 69 cm in depth, (diagram dimensions on pg 2), changing colors as you run out of yarn, but not starting a new row unless you can finish it with that color.

Cut yarn, tie off, and weave in all ends. Wet or steam block for best finished results.
